The Golden Age of Exploration began in 2250 with the end of the Federation–Klingon War and the launch of the Constitution class and ended in 2291 with the signing of the Khitomer Accords and the retirement of famed Starfleet Captain James Kirk. It was marked by high tensions between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire, leading to the reemergence of the Romulan Star Empire, the ongoing threat of a return to war, and nonaligned organizations such as the Orion Syndicate taking advantage of the situation for their own profit. However, these trying times also led to massive technical breakthroughs, such as duotronics, the cloaking device, the class 4 and 5 warp drives, and the Genesis Device. This rapid technological advancemnt allowed Starfleet to begin investing in long-term exploratory endeavors such as five-year missions. Consequently, this era became characterized by the adventures of Starfleet crews aboard proud Constitution-class vessels righting wrongs across the galaxy.
